Knitters gather. It’s what they do. That means if you knit or crochet, you need to find Your People. Sounds like an easy assignment, with the yarn arts growing in popularity every day and groups popping up in every community room and Starbucks in town. But it’s tough, in fact, to find the right group with the right blend of people where you can feel immediately at ease and welcome.
Learn the hallmarks of true, joyful and gracious community as the story of the farm unfolds. Enter into life in the Little Red Barn through heartwarming stories and loads of gorgeous color photos.
Jacob’s Reward Farm challenges the status quo. The close but welcoming group of Barnies who gather at the Little Red Barn studio a couple of Saturdays each month hasn’t fallen into the traps that close off or disintegrate many gatherings of crafters. There are no cliques, no queens, no divas.
“It’s not that we’re hiding from the scary world,” says Kate, a long-time group member. “We’re refueling and restoring ourselves to go back out and fight the battles like the warriors we are…. Life is rough. The ‘Barnies’ simply refill our fuel tanks so we can take our creative, compassionate, fierce stand out there in the ‘real’ world.”
"Watching Cindy’s Jacob’s Reward Farm take its first shaky steps and then go on to become a thriving, sustainable and beloved business has been one of the greatest joys of my professional life... The world can learn a lot from Cindy Telisak, and it has nothing to do with sheep."
--Susan Gibbs, Juniper Moon Farm
"Ms. Cindy gives us a comfortable seat in the back of her truck and takes us on [the farm] journey with her. Enjoy the ride."
--Ron Miskin, The Buffalo Wool Company
Giving Away the Farm How Kindness Critters and Yarn Knit a Community Together Cindy Telisak 9780990780816 Books
As might be expected, the transition from suburban living to stewarding a farm utilizing a fiber CSA business model didn't happen overnight or without obstacles. The author recorded this adventure with the twists and turns and lessons learned, delightful anecdotes interspersed throughout. Most intriguing to me, however, was discovering what has been created by the conscious effort of the author to share all that she has been entrusted with...knowledge, skills, animals, fiber, eggs, chores, her farm. The artisans who gather to craft & visit in the author's Little Red Barn have become a community, in the best sense of the word. The love of yarn brings this diverse fiber arts community together, mutual respect and acceptance keep the gatherings relaxed and welcoming. The 'Barnies' appear to agree with this assessment in their comments sprinkled throughout the book. What better environment could there be in which to create something wonderful?!
What has been created on this farm goes far beyond fiber, spun yarn, hats, and scarves. When giving is valued above personal gain, results that are a little out of the ordinary are pretty much guaranteed. An enjoyable, thought provoking book!

Giving Away the Farm How Kindness Critters and Yarn Knit a Community Together Cindy Telisak 9780990780816 Books Reviews
A sweet book. Wonderfully wrought, beautifully written. A tale of community building done right.
In Giving Away the Farm How Kindness, Critters and Yarn Knit a Community Together, Cindy Telisak talks about how she started a small farm in Texas, not far from the suburbs of the Dallas Fort Worth Metroplex. Her story is filled with love and told in an honest and down to Earth nature. She talks about what she’s experienced as she’s learned about starting a small farm, and becoming an even craftier individual. She shares personal experiences like the time she broke her ankle, or her first sheep purchase. Other experiences include growing a knitting group and how compassion, empathy and friendliness helped knit a group of people together. (Pun intended!) I loved the last chapter about how an unwelcome stray dog wiggled his way into Cindy’s heart, appointing himself a farm guardian while asking for not much of anything in return.
This book is proof that Cindy has left a mark on her local community, changing many people’s lives for the better and she illustrates that anyone can do so, with just a little help from some friends. Cindy also provides advice, should you choose to want to grow your own community like she has. Included in this advice is how she has developed yearly events. These yearly events include “farm camp” for children and events that support local business owners. I think that with a small amount of research done via the Internet, and this book, an individual could quickly come up with some craft making related activities to start a group or meeting for people.
Best of all, Cindy’s stories renew your faith in humanity. She tells about people who are compassionate, free of judgement, and sharing. She reminds us that we can find such people in our own neighborhood or general community. It’s also worth nothing that her book, since it’s about experiences, has a lot of pictures. The pictures bring a warm loving feeling to the experience that is reading her book.
I enjoyed reading about Cindy's journey
Great read...enjoyed it very much!
If you are thinking about opening up your farm to the public this book offers inspiration and things to consider as you take the plunge. Thanks Cindy!!
I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for ways to build community in their sphere of influence. Enjoyable, inspiring and refreshing to read about someone living life in such a generous way.
I bought this book because it’s about fiber arts, but when I read it I found out it was about so much more. The best are the chapters about finding things you didn't even know you were missing. The author writes about goals and how to make them a reality, and the way she makes things happen is a process you could apply to your own life. The stories are sweet, punchy, inspiring, and funny, and I wished there were more.
